On my recent visit to India, I was quite impressed by the programs on
ETV (eenaadu tv). One program that was particularly impressive was
"paaduthaa theeyagaa", conducted by SPB, and judged by eminent
musical directors, with a framed photograph of G in the background. The
program has 4 participants (2 m & 2 f), who are amateur singers.
There are four rounds, in which the competitors are required to sing a
film song of their choice, a non-film song of their choice, a song
chosen by SPB, and finally a song chosen by the judge. Of course,
there is an orchestra providing the background music. I was
pleasantly surprised by the fact that a majority of the male
participants chose G's songs for both their film and non-film rounds.
Couple of weeks ago the judge on the program was susarla
dhakshinaamurthy. I was under the impression that he passed away a
long time ago. It was great to see him in such good health as to even
sing a song at the end. SPB introduced him as his guru's guru. SPB
is doing a great job, with a well balanced sense of humour,
interspersed with interesting anecdotes.

On August 28th, ETV celebrated its 1st anniversary, and featured an
hour long tribute to G, introduced and conducted by SPB. It featured
clips featuring most of his famous songs, with SPB explaining the
nuances in the singing as well as in the music. He also spoke of how
G convinced the music director of Ekaviira to have SPB sing for
kaanthaa rao, though he could have done it himself. All in all it was
a memorable program.
